Sundargarh, Ganjam Rank among India’s Top 100 Accident-Prone Districts

Bhubaneswar: Sundargarh and Ganjam districts in Odisha have been ranked among India’s 100 most accident-prone districts, as per a recent communication from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to the state transport department.

The ranking, based on a survey by a private road safety agency, places Sundargarh at 84th and Ganjam at 90th for road accidents and fatalities.

In 2024, Sundargarh had 902 accidents (521 deaths, 701 injuries), with two-wheeler collisions (23% fatalities) and hit-and-runs (20.3%) as major causes.

Ganjam recorded 820 accidents (392 deaths, 710 injuries), with speeding and non-helmet use (60% of deaths) as key issues. Ganjam’s national highways saw 171 deaths, state highways 110.

To address this, the Transport department plans to install IEMS cameras and deploy RAISE teams for crash investigations and enforcement in high-risk areas, as per reports.
