Puri: The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has declined an appeal by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb to align its global Rath Yatra celebrations with the traditional Odia calendar, stating that the matter stands concluded.
In a letter dated July 7, 2026, ISKCON Governing Body Commission Chairman Madhusevita Dasa responded to the Gajapati Maharaja’s request, saying the organisation had nothing further to add to the discussion. The letter concluded with the statement: “There is no more to add, and therefore we respectfully bow out of this discussion once and for all.”
The Gajapati Maharaja, revered as the traditional first servitor and custodian of the rituals of Shree Jagannath Temple, had urged ISKCON to observe Rath Yatra strictly according to the prescribed tithi (lunar date) followed in the centuries-old Jagannath tradition. He had stressed that maintaining the original ritual calendar is essential to preserving the sanctity and authenticity of the festival.
However, ISKCON’s response makes it clear that the organisation will continue conducting Rath Yatra celebrations in different countries according to its existing schedule rather than strictly following the Odia religious calendar.
The decision has drawn strong reactions from many Lord Jagannath devotees, who argue that the timing of Rath Yatra is intrinsically linked to the temple’s sacred rituals and should remain uniform across the world. Many believe that celebrating the festival on different dates could weaken its traditional and spiritual significance.
The development also underscores the continuing differences between the traditional custodians of Jagannath culture and ISKCON over the global observance of Rath Yatra. With ISKCON formally ending the correspondence, the issue is expected to remain a subject of debate among devotees and religious scholars over balancing ancient traditions with international organisational practices.
