Bargarh Minor Girl Succumbs to Burn Injuries

Bhubaneswar: : In a tragic incident, a 13-year-old girl from Paikmal block in Odisha’s Bargarh district died of severe burn injuries on Monday, just hours after allegedly setting herself on fire.
This marks the fourth such case in the state within a month.

As per the police, the Class 8 student had gone to her maternal uncle’s house over the weekend to meet her mother and celebrate Raksha Bandhan. Around 7:30 am on Monday, she reportedly went to a nearby field, poured petrol on herself, and set herself ablaze. Villagers rushed to extinguish the flames but she had already sustained critical injuries. She was shifted to VIMSAR Medical College in Burla, where she succumbed to her injuries, according to reports.

The reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained. An investigation is underway, Bargarh. The girl’s father is a migrant labourer and her mother had been staying with her parents, police added.

The case adds to a disturbing spate of similar incidents in Odisha. On July 12, a 20-year-old woman student in Balasore’s FM College set herself ablaze on campus, succumbing later. On July 19, a minor girl in Balanga died after allegedly being set on fire by three miscreants. On August 6, a third-year college student’s charred body was recovered from her home in Pattamundai, Kendrapara district.
