Bargarh: Police SI Nabbed for Accepting Bribe from Scrap Dealer

Bargarh: Odisha Vigilance apprehended Jagaa Bariha, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Police at Bijepur Police Station, Bargarh district, on Monday, while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 7,000 from a local scrap dealer.

The arrest took place earlier today following a trap laid by the Vigilance sleuths.

According to the Vigilance, SI Bariha had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 from the complainant, a scrap dealer, to allow him to operate his business smoothly and avoid any legal action against him. When the complainant expressed his inability to pay the demanded amount, Bariha reduced the bribe to Rs 7,000 but threatened strong action if the sum was not paid. Left with no choice, the scrap dealer reported the matter to the Odisha Vigilance authorities, prompting swift action.

Acting on the complaint, Vigilance officers set up a trap and caught SI Bariha red-handed while accepting the bribe of Rs 7,000.

The entire amount of tainted bribe money was recovered from Bariha’s possession and seized by the authorities.

In connection with the incident, Sambalpur Vigilance Police Station has registered a case against the SI. Simultaneous searches are underway at three locations linked to SI Bariha to investigate potential disproportionate assets (DA).
