Depression Over Bay of Bengal Likely to Intensify into Deep Depression Near Odisha Coast by Sept 23

Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Andaman Sea on Saturday evening and intensify into a depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal by September 21, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

According to the IMD’s Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar, the system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a deep depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal by September 22.

The system is likely to reach the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, near the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts, by the morning of September 23.

Under its influence, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places across Odisha during the next 24 hours.

The IMD has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph at one or two places in Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam districts.

A yellow warning has been issued for Baleswar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh districts, where thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places.

Meanwhile, squally weather, with wind speeds reaching 45-55 kmph and gusting up to 65 kmph, is expected to prevail along and off the Odisha coast until September 22. Sea conditions are likely to remain rough to very rough during this period.

The IMD has advised fishermen to return to the coast by the evening of September 22 in view of the anticipated deterioration in weather and sea conditions.
