Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance on Saturday arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police posted at Jarapada Police Station in Angul district for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000 from a complainant.
The accused, identified as Sita Nayak, had allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 to facilitate a compromise settlement in a case recently registered between the complainant and his opponent. However, after the complainant expressed his inability to pay the amount, the ASI reportedly reduced the demand to Rs 8,000.
Unwilling to succumb to the bribery demand, the complainant approached Odisha Vigilance authorities and lodged a complaint. Acting on the information, Vigilance officials verified the allegations and laid a trap.
During the operation, Nayak was caught red-handed while allegedly receiving the bribe amount from the complainant inside the premises of Jarapada Police Station. The entire tainted money amounting to Rs 8,000 was recovered from her possession and seized in the presence of witnesses.
Following the successful trap, Vigilance teams launched simultaneous searches at two locations associated with the accused to investigate possible accumulation of assets disproportionate to her known sources of income. A case has been registered against the ASI.
